CANDIDATE PROFILE: Greg Fischer - WDRB 41 Louisville News

Fox 41 News continues its coverage of the 2010 election for Louisville Mayor.  Bennett Haeberle gets to know the man leading the field of Democrats -- businessman Greg Fischer.

"I have a job creation background because that's the number one issue... jobs, jobs, jobs." Louisville businessman Greg Fischer says his job creation background should be important to voters in a city where 37,000 people don't have a job:  "It is the number issue that ties everybody, that ties into the taxes that are paid into the city, that ties into the social services. So having robust employment is the number one issue."

He says the future of Louisville depends on its main manufacturing companies like Ford and General Electric.  While he's received several labor endorsements from the United Auto Workers and firefighters, some have criticized Fischer for being anti-union.

He responds, "Oh, nothing could be further from the truth. Those are from my competitors that wish they had my support. So I've received endorsements from the United Auto Workers, the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters, The electricians, the laborers, SCIU, all but one of the labor endorsements I've received. So they are trying to knock my credibility there."

Recent polls show Fischer in the lead among seven Democratic challengers. Fischer claims to have outraised his opponents.  He put $30,000 of his own money to seed his campaign fundraising.  "We see money raised as a symbol of support for the campaign," he says.

If elected, Fischer says he'd run the city like an $800 million enterprise.  He wants to talk to city employees to find out how to improve city departments.

While political TV ads have begun to air, Fischer says he hopes the race will avoid any mudslinging.  "People are hurting right now," he says. "They don't need to see any theatrics from any candidates that is taking away from what the mission, is which is to grow jobs from the city of Louisville."
