
FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A sister of former Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer has resigned as assistant executive director of the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance. Rhonda Monroe had been placed on paid leave on March 19, a day after she and Farmer were charged by the Executive Branch Ethics Commission with filing false documents.
BEREA, Ky. (AP) - Officials in Madison County say Sheriff Jerry R. Combs has died after suffering a heart attack. Deputy Willard Reardon told the Lexington Herald-Leader that the 61-year-old Combs collapsed yesterday at his parents' home in Berea. The Richmond Register reported last year that Combs received a liver transplant in October.
ST. LOUIS (AP) - There have been a dozen arrests in St. Louis after another round of protests involving United Mine Workers of America and their supporters. Several hundred protesters gathered again today near the federal courthouse, the site of a recent bankruptcy case involving St. Louis-based Patriot Coal.
Two former officials of defunct cattle broker Eastern Livestock were sentenced to prison today for their roles in a $32 million check-kiting scheme. U.S. District Judge Thomas B. Russell in Louisville ordered company founder Thomas "Tommy" Gibson incarcerated for 70 months and Chief Financial Officer Michael Steven McDonald imprisoned for 57 months.
