Darts and Laurels (3/19/09)
Time for a few more Darts and Laurels - except this time let's skip the Darts.
My first Laurel goes to U of L's Men's basketball team for gaining the overall #1 seed in the NCAA tournament.
Think about it: How many companies or individuals in this city can truthfully boast of being considered the absolute best in the nation at what they do? Well, that's exactly what that #1 seed means. And regardless of the tourney's final outcome, every member of that Cardinal team can take pride in knowing they've earned the greatest respect possible in their field.
I'd also like to offer a Laurel to the U of L Women's basketball team. They have not only achieved a high level of excellence themselves getting a number 3 seed that probably should have been higher, but their brand of basketball has become very marketable. They regularly put 10,000 or more fans in the stands at Freedom Hall when they played this season and that is truly something to cheer for.
And a final Laurel goes to everyone who's played a role in keeping the new downtown arena project on track. While a lot of big projects have been put on hold while the economy sorts itself out, it's been full speed ahead at 2nd and Main ever since the first shovel full of dirt was turned. And just seeing all that activity every day is a great psychological tonic for everyone who drives by.
I'm Bill Lamb and that's my...Point of View.
