200 dogs seized in sales tax evasion case

More than two hundred dogs are seized after a search warrant is issued for a southern Indiana farm for alleged sales-tax evasion.

The warrant was executed Tuesday morning at three properties in Mauckport, Indiana, including a so-called puppy mill.

There were complaints that the property owner and her daughter were breeding and selling dogs for hundreds of dollars without collecting and giving sales taxes to the state.

That's when Indiana's attorney general got involved.  Greg Zoeller says no criminal charges have been filed as of yet, and hopes a new bill will help cut down on the number of puppy mills in the Hoosier state" "One of the problems in Indiana, frankly, is that this has been an unregulated area.  So it's attracted a lot of these operations that can open up fairly cheaply and really without any regulations to do whatever they care to as cheaply and, lets say, inhumanely as they care to."

The property owner and her daughter now owe the state more than $130,000.  The seized dogs will be available for adoption in a few weeks.
