Guest Editorial - Javanon (6/12/09)
As a soccer parent and volunteer, I'd like to set the record straight about Javanon's new soccer facility.
I attended both recent Board of Zoning Adjustment hearings. Each time, the City employee who approved our plan revisions said he made a mistake.
I know Javanon's founder, Mr. Ali Ahmadi, to be an honest man who has done his level-best to comply with zoning rules. The plan he submitted clearly showed a future building, and the property is clearly designated by the land development code for uses far more intense than this one.
The zoning staff person never testified that Javanon's founder, Mr. Ahmadi, tricked him. Mr. Ahmadi's day job was traffic engineering. The zoning staff person's job was totally unrelated. And the staff person owned up to a mistake after his bosses concluded the building may have required the added BOZA review he missed.
Javanon received approval at the last hearing because the building is attractive and, with lots of landscaping and use limitations, it will nicely fit into an area that the Development Code specifically designates for buildings of this kind. By the way, no one associated with Javanon attended the pre-meeting before the last BOZA hearing. The County Attorney has said his office should have opened the meeting to the public. Javanon should not be penalized for that mistake.
People who made mistakes have owned up to them. Fruitless finger-pointing should stop. The soccer kids should be allowed to play in the nice facility built and supported by volunteers.
I'm Sandy Steier, and that's my...Point of View.
