Jeffersonville Census office needs 200 new employees

From the U.S. Census Bureau:

Help Wanted: Census Bureau's Jeffersonville
office needs 200 new employees for clerk jobs

At a time when many employers face hiring freezes or layoffs, the U.S. Census Bureau's National Processing Center (NPC) in Jeffersonville, Indiana is growing its workforce. The NPC has launched the first stage of its large-scale hiring effort as it prepares for Census 2010.

Right now, the NPC is hiring at least 200 clerks to work at its two Jeffersonville locations: 1201 E. 10th St. and 700 Patrol Rd. The clerks perform many different duties, which vary depending on the area to which they are assigned. Clerk duties include filing, preparing documents for processing, preparing materials for storage and shipping, working on an assembly line, processing mail and/or light computer work.

The entry-level pay for these positions is $13.18 /hour with an additional 10 percent paid for any hours worked between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Applications for these jobs will only be accepted online. To apply for and get details on the positions, visit http://www.usajobs.gov. Applicants should have one year of general office or clerical experience. The jobs are open to U.S. citizens and nationals.

These are temporary jobs that will last through the Census 2010 processing cycle. Work may take place in an office setting or a warehouse environment. Applicants must be able to frequently lift items weighing up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift items weighing more than that. For additional information about the jobs, call 1-866-306-8779.

The NPC expects to hire up to 2,000 people as the 2010 Census approaches, bringing its total employment level to about 5,000 at the peak of census processing. Watch for data transcriber jobs to be posted in late June or early July on the USAJOBS Web site; there will be hundreds of openings for these positions. A third wave of large-scale hiring is planned for early 2010.
