Counterfeit money circulating in Elkhart, Ind.

Somebody has been making money and spending it at local businesses, but they're not benefiting because the money is fake.

Lt. Ed Windbigler says Elkhart police have taken at least 16 reports of counterfeit $20, $50 and $100 bills since Tuesday. Officers since then have recovered $1,500 in bogus bills, including $900 worth over the weekend.

The counterfeit currency has been spent or received in change at gas stations, fast-food restaurants, a night club and other businesses.  Managers have been urged their employees to closely check currency for its authenticity.
