Bullitt County recovers some of stolen money

Bullitt County officials have recovered some of the $400,000 in taxpayer money stolen by a cyber thief. So far, officials have recovered more than $100,000.

And while county officials want it all back, they also want an arrest made, and so do tax payers.

"At first we thought it was a joke." says Scott Miller. He owns Keith's Barber shop on Buckman Street in Bullitt County. His customers usually pay by cash so he has to calculate his taxes during the year. "You pay Uncle Sam quarterly."

That's why Miller is concerned about his missing tax dollars. "I work hard you know to make sure I pay my taxes on time and some joker comes along and steals it."

Last week, county officials learned more than $400,000 was missing from the county's account at first federal savings. Now they know computer hackers used a virus go gain access to the account. "There was a virus called Zeus." said county Judge Executive Melanie Roberts.

Now that county officials know cyber thieves got access to the account they're working with the bank to freeze the account and recover some of the money.

"We have recovered a hundred-five thousand dollars." said county attorney Walt Sholar.

The problem is much more is still missing, but county officials are determined to recover all of the money and find the suspects.

"I have spent virtually all of my waking hours since last Tuesday in an effort to recover the funds that were stolen from the county," said Walt Sholar

"We here in county government are striving to get every penny back," said Judge Roberts.

"I can not tell you how strongly I feel about searching out and finding the person or persons responsible for this theft and bringing them to justice," said Sholar.

Meanwhile, the missing money will not cause any services to be cut in Bullitt County.
