Family still seeks answers 3 years after fatal hit-and-run

By Bennett Haeberle, WDRB-TV Fox 41 News

It was three years ago that a hit-and-run accident claimed the life of a 29-year-old mother of two.

Whoever struck and killed Natosha Rhyne has not been caught or charged.  The details surrounding her death are unclear.

But what's more puzzling to her family is why someone would try to stop the case from being solved.

"All that I can think about is her and the call that I got that night," said Debbie Barringer, family friend.

A phone call that arrived late one night in July of 2006.

"It was awful when her mom called me and told that Natosha was dead," said Debbie.

Rhyne's death is a topic still difficult to talk about three years after she was killed in a hit and run accident along the Outer Loop.

"It's been three years... and still no answers," said Debbie.

Debbie Barringer is a family friend, who thought of Rhyne as her niece.

"She called me 'Aunt Debbie,'" remembers Debbie.

Natosha was struck as she stood by her white Dodge Neon in the emergency lane.  Whoever did it took off, leaving her two children without a mother and a family left with questions.

"The homicide detectives said that somebody would have had to have swerved to hit her," said Debbie.

Natosha Rhyne's family still puts up posters offering rewards for information about her case, the funny thing is, they often end up disappearing.

Barringer says it's unclear who would remove the poster and why.  Natosha's mother was too distraught to speak on camera, but still holds onto her daughter's cellphone, which was recovered from the accident scene.

On such a busy roadway, Natosha's family is still puzzled that more witnesses have not come forward and that no arrests have been made.

"You have to wonder what happened and if we'll ever know," said Debbie.

Two people initially suspected in this case have since been cleared.  Metro Police detectives are still investigating.
