Ky. board upholds $200,000 award in dorm death
Attorneys say the Kentucky Board of Claims has upheld a $200,000 award to the estate of a Western Kentucky University student who was killed six years ago.
Attorney Ben Crocker represents the estate of Melissa Kaye "Katie" Autry of Hancock County, who was a student at Western when she was attacked in her dorm room and set on fire. She died several days later.
Crocker says the board found that Western failed to follow security procedures. He said he hoped the university would use the opportunity to make dorms safer.
But university attorney Greg Stivers says the award is based on hearsay testimony and that Western is considering an appeal. Stivers says Western is disappointed that the hearing officer took the testimony of the man who admitted attacking Autry over the desk clerk on duty the night of the attack.
