Ky. receives more than $5 million to hire police

18 Kentucky police departments have been awarded a total of more than $5 million in federal grant money to pay for 31 police officer salaries.

The Obama administration announced Tuesday the grants range from approximately $80,000 to hire one officer at the Cumberland Police Department to more than $660,000 to hire four officers in Hopkinsville.

The money will pay for the officers' salary and benefits for three years.

Hopkinsville Police Chief Guy Howie says was shocked his department received the most funds in the state.  Louisville and Lexington, the state's two largest cities, received nothing.

Chad Carlton, spokesman for the Louisville mayor's office, said it was "disappointing."
