Special Forces return to Fort Campbell

The 5th Special Forces Group has returned to Fort Campbell after a six-month tour in Iraq without having anyone killed and only one soldier injured in the combat zone.

The group's commander, Col. Christopher Conner, told The Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle on Saturday that the security situation in Iraq had improved dramatically, with violence dropping.

Conner and about 50 soldiers returned to the sprawling military post on the Kentucky-Tennesee border on Saturday.

Conner and his soldiers were partly responsible for establishing security for the Jan. 31 provincial elections. The January elections showed a marked decrease in violence and protests from the 2005 elections, which were plagued by attacks on polling places.
