Indiana students heading back to school could see higher textbook rental fees in some districts this year.

Book fees for elementary school average about $100 to $120 in Indiana, which is one of only a handful of states to charge for textbook rentals. Courts have ruled the policy does not violate the state's constitution.

State lawmakers in 2007 proposed requiring the state to pay school corporations $95 per student to cover the cost of textbooks, but the measure failed.

Parents say the fees add up, especially for families with more than one child in school. But school officials contend they keep some of the tax burden off people by charging only those with children in the school system instead of taking the money from the general fund.
