Nothing Fair About Fair Parking (9/1/09)
Every year the Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center does an absolutely abysmal job handling the big traffic crunches that invariably occur when big weekend crowds are boosted even more by big name concerts.
Annually, hundreds of people pay big money for tickets to shows like last week's Keith Urban concert, only to get caught in so much traffic outside the Fairgrounds they miss a big part of the show, if not the whole thing. And these aren't people who showed up at the last minute. I'm talking about people who left home at five for an 8:00 o'clock show and still couldn't make curtain time.
And have you ever heard even an acknowledgement of the problem - much less an apology? I haven't.
The truth is, parking at the Fair involves a toxic mix of needless multiple levels of ticket takers, a woeful lack of traffic cops and people in charge who refuse to open overflow lots even when every other space is bursting at the seams.
They're eager to take your six bucks, but then completely wash their hands of getting you to a parking place. It's not a new problem. And it's not just at State Fair time. Parking is a mess for U of L games and even worse when they schedule a flea market or gun show on the day of a game. It's been around as long as Ring Road and it is just not getting better.
The Fair Board needs to acknowledge this problem, apologize for it, and fix it.
