If I Ruled the World (9/8/09)

Our periodic "If I ruled the world" segments seem to generate a lot of feedback, so let's try another round.

If I ruled the world, anyone who wanted to speak their mind on the Internet would have to supply their real name along with their comments. I'd certainly never want to go back to a pre-Internet world. But the anonymity the web provides has created a haven for cowards to spew vile, hateful and slanderous speech they'd never have the guts to say in person. And it only encourages life's losers to try to obscure their own shortcomings by targeting others with their vicious, immature rants.

Also, if I ruled the world, no telephone answering system would be allowed to waste your time by taking any more than five seconds telling you what to do at the beep.

Maybe this was necessary about forty years ago. But by now, trust me. I know what to do at the beep.

And finally, if I ruled the world, parents who automatically take their child's side in any disciplinary issue at school would be required to first spend three days observing their kid's classroom in action before lodging a complaint.

When I was a kid, I dreaded being punished at school because I knew I'd get it again when my parents found out. But these days, it seems everyone thinks their little darlings are just poor, mistreated victims of an unjust system.

How about you? What would you do if you ruled the world? Call and let us know.

I'm Bill Lamb, and that's my...Point of View.
