Community colleges pushing against budget cuts

The head of Kentucky's community college system is trying to build opposition to potential state budget cuts on the horizon.

Kentucky Community & Technical College System President Michael McCall is seeking support to hold the schools' base funding at $215 million. The move comes as state government braces for the possibility of more dire budget times ahead.

McCall says more people are turning to community colleges for retraining, as the state's unemployment rate averages about 11 percent. The community colleges head visited the West Kentucky Community & Technical College's Skilled Craft Training Center in the last week.

He's also visiting all the system's 16 colleges before January. McCall's legislative agenda for next year includes $481 million for capital projects.
