Some doubts about earrings tied to Mrs. Lincoln
The Kentucky Historical Society has been displaying and publicizing a pair of earrings as having belonged to former first lady Mary Todd Lincoln.
Others aren't as sure about the earrings' authenticity. The historical society has said on its Web site that Abraham Lincoln's wife prized the earrings.
Historical Society Executive Director Kent Whitworth says that, in the society's best professional judgment, the earrings once belonged to Mary Todd Lincoln.
Documents that came with the earrings trace them to a Chicago collector who died in 1920. The collector reportedly told the son of the man to whom he sold or traded the earrings that he knew they were Mrs. Lincoln's but couldn't remember why he knew it.
