To the Loser Belongs the Spoils (12/3/09)
U of L's decision to fire head football coach Steve Kragthorpe was the right one. Quite simply, he didn't win enough games and had lost the fans' support. The truth is, he took an Orange Bowl winning program -- one that came within a field goal of perhaps playing for the national championship -- and quickly turned it into an also-ran.
But although it was the right decision, I know it was also a very tough one for Athletic Director Tom Jurich, because Coach Kragthorpe is a quality person. My guess is that Kragthorpe was doing many things the way Jurich wanted things done -- except he wasn't winning. Even in his departure Kragthorpe took the high road, recognizing that fact. And he didn't blame anyone else for that failure. In big time college sports you either win or you move on quickly.
I certainly can't fault Steve Kragthorpe for taking the $4.5 million his contract says is due him, but I can't help thinking about how upside down everything is when so many other people are losing their jobs these days -- not because they failed their employers or customers but because the economy failed them. And they leave with little or no additional compensation.
But hey! It could be worse. We could be Notre Dame and be paying out $18 million dollars to a coach who failed to win on an even bigger stage.
So at least there's that.
