Karen Knight-Wilburn- Louisville, KY

My sister took me to my first Kentucky Derby when I was 14. We went to the infield and one of the first sights was a naked guy climbing the flagpole. Of course, police officers were waiting at the bottom for him to come down. I thought this was just wild, and at 14 it was wild! I wondered why I had never come to the Derby before. My father took us to the races, but he never went to the Derby. The whole day was just wonderful. We took the bus home and transferred at 4th and Broadway. We went into the drugstore on that corner, and there was Colonel Sanders and his wife sitting at the lunch counter having a bite to eat.

I have been to every Derby since then, except for two when I was living in Hawaii and could not afford the trip home. This year was my 43rd Derby. I wouldn't miss it for the world!! I am still referred to as "Queen of Derby" by a journalist friend who used to come by my apartment years ago and shout out, " Hey, Queen of Derby! Where are the parties?"

Every time that I hear "My Old Kentucky Home", I get goose bumps and think of the Derby. It brings tears to my eyes. This is definitely my Derby too!!!
