A volunteer deputy in southeastern Kentucky who is running for constable says he doesn't condone cockfights after being filmed at one.

Duane Hess of London and a state trooper were recorded by The Humane Society of the United States.

The Times-Tribune in Corbin reported Hess is seeking office in Laurel County as one of four Republican candidates for constable in District 1.

Constables are elected by magistrate district and are required to have the same training as a deputy sheriff. Their authority varies by county.

Hess and Clay County Sheriff Kevin Johnson said Hess went to the Laurel Creek Game Club in January 2009 after hearing that a fugitive was at the cockfight.

Hess said cockfighting is animal abuse and he opposes it.
