Senator Bunning blocks unemployment benefits

Kentucky Senator Jim Bunning is taking a lot of heat for blocking a temporary measure to keep federal money flowing for extended unemployment benefits. Bunning has blocked the 30 day, temporary extension because Senate Democrats have refused to find savings to pay for it.

The President signed a bill earlier this month requiring Congress to pay for programs by cutting from the budget or raising taxes. Democrats claim Bunnings block will cut benefits to more than a million people. But no one really expects an interruption of unemployment benefits.

"If we can't find $10 billion to pay for something that we all support, we will never pay for anything on the floor of this U.S. Senate. There might be some delay in federal paperwork but the odds of unemployment offices actually closing up shop," said Brian Riedl, Heritage Foundation.

Lawmakers from both parties have already agreed to work on a permanent fix. It would restore the unemployment money and cuts to Medicare reimbursements for doctors. It would cost about $100 billion and analysts say it is likely to pass this week.
