In 1973 my sister came home from college and brought several friends. She was kind enough to let her 12 year old sister (me) tag along to the Derby. To the infield! I had never seen anything like it – people everywhere, music playing, people dancing, people drinking, people already drunk at 9:00 in the morning!
It was the year streaking was the big fad….. I remember a guy going up the flag pole naked – the police waiting at the bottom. He would not come down. As my sister and her friends continue to drink, her college friends suggested she go streaking. She said the only way she would streak was if she could go across the track just before the Derby race. I knew she wasn't serious. Just as My Old Kentucky Home finished playing, I looked around and saw she was half way up the fence. I grabbed her shirt and pulled her down. She did not streak. It was a wild experience for a 12 year old, but a wonderful one. This year will be my 35th Derby. I LOVE DERBY! I even got married at Churchill Downs – our wedding song was My Old Kentucky Home.
