Teaching your dog some manners

It's not easy to teach a new or an old dog how to behave in public. Kat Rooks from the Kentucky Humane Society shows some of the finer points of doggie etiquette in public.

She says you need to teach dogs to greet people by sitting instead of jumping up. Shorten your leash as you approach people and stop a couple feet away. Ask the dog to sit and then after he does so, allow people to pet him. The dog will learn that attention is contingent upon appropriate behavior.

Also, be respectful: bring poop bags and plan to clean up if your dog eliminates. Obey leash laws. Bring water and a bowl for your dog.

And remember thath not all dogs are comfortable greeting other dogs. Ask before allowing your dog to approach a strange dog.
