Party for the planet at the Louisville Zoo

Posted:

The Louisville Zoo is hosting a month-long "Party for the Planet" to celebrate Earth Day.  Spokeswoman Kara Bussabarger shows a Greek tortoise, as she explains what the zoo has planned for their big Earth Day weekend.

Facts about Greek tortoises:

- Their range is Mediterranean - primarily the islands of the Mediterranean, Greece, Turkey

-Turtles and tortoises have hard, protective shells that are made up of 59 to 61 bones covered by plates. Like your bones, a turtle's shell is part of its skeleton. The turtle cannot crawl out of it, because the shell is permanently attached to the spine and the rib cage. Turtles can feel pressure and pain through their shells, just as you can feel pressure through your fingernails.

* The sex of the eggs is determined by incubation temperatures. At lower temperatures, the hatchlings will be male, at higher temperatures the hatchlings will be female. Average temperatures will produce mixed clutches.
