Jailed Ind. man dies 3 days after falling ill

Northern Indiana authorities are investigating the death of a 19-year-old man who died in a hospital three days after falling ill at a city jail. The Lake County coroner's office is trying to find out why Walter C. Evans died.

The Portage man was pronounced dead Friday at a Hobart hospital. The coroner's spokesman says Evans showed no visible signs of trauma and his death is under forensic investigation.

Evans and a Lake Station man were arrested together Monday night and were being held at the Lake Station Jail on probable cause for burglary charges.

Lake Station Police Chief Michael Stills says another inmate told police Tuesday afternoon that Evans was unresponsive. Still says he hopes pending toxicology tests will help explain why Evans died.
