Nonprofit group sues Indiana over robocall ban

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- A nonprofit has filed a federal lawsuit against Indiana, claiming that the state's ban on robocall violates the group's right to free speech.

The lawsuit filed recently by Patriotic Veterans Inc. challenges a law that prohibits using automatically dialed phone calls to deliver a prerecorded message unless consumers have given consent.

Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller said in statement that he will defend the law.

Patriotic Veterans claims the Indiana law is pre-empted by a similar but a more lenient federal law that took effect Sept. 1. The group said it plans to use the calls ahead of the November election.
