I was pleased to see that Julie Denton, a Republican Senator from Louisville, has announced she will challenge David Williams for the position of President of the Kentucky Senate. She is a good person, and in the few dealings I've had with her she has been fair and sincere.
I agree with Ms. Denton that a change is needed. She offers a clear alternative to Mr. Williams' heavy handed, self serving approach.
David Williams is smart and he knows the system, but his style of leadership isn't working. A true leader must somehow find solutions to problems, must build bridges with his opponents so the people can be served -- not just logjam everything until he gets his way. A true leader must make sure his constituents get their fair share, but must be careful never to take more than he is entitled to. When Mr. Williams took over $300 million dollars for road projects for the sparsely populated counties that elected him, he simply took advantage of the rest of us because he could.
Julie Denton will be a breath of fresh air for a very stale and moribund Kentucky Senate. I don't know if she can overcome David Williams' political machine, but I wish her well in trying. The one thing I do know is this: Kentucky needs some new leadership in Frankfort.
I'm Bill Lamb, and that's my…Point of View.
