Jack Conway, Rand Paul speak in downtown Louisville

Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul tried to link his Democratic opponent to President Obama on health care and environmental issues in their first faceoff of the general election campaign.

Attorney General Jack Conway countered by slamming Paul for earlier comments that seemed to defend BP in the aftermath of the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Paul responded that BP is responsible for the spill and should pay for the cleanup.

The rivals spoke at length before a gathering of county officials meeting in downtown Louisville.

Paul continued to call for a balanced budget, a main theme of his campaign. Conway warned that Paul's opposition to earmarks would hurt local communities across Kentucky.

The candidates are competing to replace Republican U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning, who is retiring after two terms.
