LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB Fox 41) -- A Louisville recovery center hopes to help end homelessness and drug addiction among women in Kentuckiana.  Tuesday afternoon, the Healing Place held its grand opening and dedication.  "It's a world class facility for a world class recovery program.  This is the largest recovery center in the commonwealth," says Jay Davidson, President & CEO of the Healing Place.

The new $19 million facility is located on 8.1 acres of land at the corner of 15th and Hill Streets in the Park Hill neighborhood.  It allows the center to treat twice as many women.  "The previous shelter housed 116 women, we now have space for 200 women and 40 children," says Davidson.

The center actually changed locations several months ago.  Diane Fornwalt believes it helped save her life after she hit rock bottom because of an addiction to prescription drugs.  "And when I ran out, used alcohol to supplement," says Fornwalt.  "And my family, they said, you've got to get treatment. They were shocked."

Fornwalt's next stop was the Healing Place.  She says the new location is very child and family friendly.  That's makes it easy for women who have children and need help. "A woman would be much more likely to stay if could spend quality time with her children here," says Fornwalt.

"And we know the way to break the cycle of addiction is to reach the kids," says Davidson.

First Lady Jane Beshear also became involved after a visit to the shelter several months ago.  "It was such a heartfelt experience for the First Lady that she said I want to do anything I can to help, and so when we asked her to be an honorary co-chair of our capital campaign she said yes," says Davidson.

The Healing Place still needs to raise another $1.5 million to finish paying for the new facility.
