Bank robbery suspect commits suicide

HARDINSBURG, Ind. (WDRB Fox 41)---  Police say a suspected bank robber took his own life after a chase in two southern Indiana counties.

At dusk the suspected bank robber still lay dead inside a silver Ford Taurus. The car sat at the end of a driveway, at the end of a dead-end North Yukon Road near Hardinsburg, Indiana.

Indiana State Police say the robber took his own life and the car crashed into the homeowner's garage. They don't know why he shot himself. But they do know what happened in the minutes before.

"A guy walks into the bank there, brandishing a firearm there, demanding money," said Sgt. Jerry Goodin.

The robbery occurred about 3:45 p.m. Friday at First Harrison Bank in Hardinsburg, about five miles from where police say the suspect shot himself.

Officers say an Indiana state trooper on his way home saw the Taurus and started a pursuit on the back roads through Washington and Crawford Counties.

Eventually, they say the suspected robber found he couldn't turn around in that last driveway. They approached the vehicle.  Then, the man inside shot himself.

No one else was hurt in the chase or at the bank, police said.

Police told Fox 41 News they found cash believed to be from the bank inside the car.

They have not released the suspected robber's name, and they don't believe he's a local from southern Indiana.
