Baby sitter of boy who died gets 6-year sentence

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) -- A judge ordered the maximum six-year prison sentence for a baby sitter who admitted that she left a baby unattended in her Muncie home the afternoon he died and then lied to police about her whereabouts.

Tina Byrd said during Tuesday's court hearing that she would always regret what she did the day that 4-month-old Matthew Cheng died. Byrd pleaded guilty last month to felony charges of child neglect and obstruction of justice.

The Star Press reports that Byrd said that the "ripple effect of my sins was far reaching."

But Delaware Circuit Court Judge Thomas Cannon Jr. told Byrd that her actions Jan. 19 were "abhorrent and unthinkable." Police said surveillance video showed Byrd shopping less than 30 minutes before she reported finding Matthew unresponsive in a crib.
