Clinton: US working to ending Mexico drug violence

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Speaking in San Francisco, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton reiterated her support for helping end "the brutality and barbarity" of Mexico's drug violence.

Clinton spoke Friday evening at a sold-out meeting of the nonpartisan Commonwealth Club.

She says it's in the United States' interest to crack down on drug cartels that have taken on attributes of terrorists and insurgent groups elsewhere around the world.

Clinton also said she was surprised that comments she made last month comparing Mexico to Colombia during its past cocaine wars had been critically received.

She described Friday's speaking engagement as just her third domestic public appearance since joining President Barack Obama's cabinet last year.
