Louisville Water Company celebrates 150 years

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB Fox 41) -- Louisville water is celebrating 150 years, providing the city with an abundant supply of drinking water. To celebrate this milestone, the company held a big open-house at the historic Water Tower on River Road.

Guest had the chance to visit the pumping stations, and take a look at original cast iron pipes installed in 1860, as part of the original water-works.

"The original facility from the Louisville Water Company are National Historic Landmarks, which means it takes a lot of work to keep these buildings in shape, so the pumping station, we are just wrapping up a restoration project on that building, that will really restore it to what it was like in 1860," said Kelley Dearing Smith, Louisville Water Company.

Louisville Water began as Kentucky's first public water provider on October 16, 1860 and provides drinking water to 830,000 people.
