Indiana church treasurer accused of stealing $257K

PETERSBURG, Ind. (AP) -- An Indiana State Police spokesman says the ex-treasurer of a church in Petersburg has been arrested on accusations that she embezzled $257,000.

Sgt. Todd Ringle says 68-year-old Phyllis Jones of Petersburg surrendered Monday at the Pike County Jail. Ringle says she was released on bond.

A man who answered the phone at Jones' home referred a request for comment to her lawyer, Robert Canada. A message was left with Canada's office Monday.

Ringle says an investigation found that Jones stole at least $257,000 from the Gospel Center Church in Petersburg, about 70 miles south of Terre Haute.

He says Jones "issued over 1,000 checks to unauthorized payees" between 2003 and April 2010.
