"Lion King" child actress dies

NEW YORK (AP) -- The Broadway theater where "The Lion King" plays dimmed its lights Tuesday night in tribute to the 11-year-old actress who has died. Shannon Tavarez passed away Monday at a hospital on New York's Long Island of leukemia.

She played the role of Nala, the childhood pal of Simba in the Broadway version of the hit animated movie. Shannon's battle against the disease won the hearts of older celebrities such as Alicia Keys, Rihanna and 50 Cent.

In a statement, Shannon's mom said her daughter's dream was to perform on stage -- and she got to live that dream. Keys, Rihanna and 50 Cent campaigned to help Tavarez find a bone marrow donor, and cast members held bone marrow donor registration drives outside the play's Minskoff Theater -- where the marquee was dimmed to honor Shannon last night.
