Crews responding to reports of sinking barge

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB Fox 41) -- A spokesperson for the Coast Guard tells Fox 41 News that state and local officials are responding to a barge that was sinking in the Ohio River.

Ensign Tucker Rodeffer, a spokesperson for the Coast Guard, says that at approximately 8:30, the Guard received a call from the City of Redwood -- a vessel leading a team of seven barges down the Ohio River. The caller reported that one of the seven barges was taking on water.

Ensign Rodeffer says the barge in question was carrying hydrochloric acid.

The barge is currently beached on the Kentucky side of the river, according to Rodeffer. He says the barge crew has a diver in the water to assess any structural damage that might exist. The chamber of the barge that is leaking is empty.

Rodeffer says there are no reports of any hydrochloric acid leaking into the water at this time.

There are no reports of any injuries.

Metrosafe dispatchers say the barge is currently located at the 626 mile marker of the river, near the very south end of Dixie Highway.

The Pleasure Ridge Park Fire Department and the Coast Guard are also responding to the scene.
