Ky. man held in deaths of mother, fiancee

RICHMOND, Ky. (AP) -- A central Kentucky man whose mother and fiancee were found slain has pleaded not guilty to charges that he killed them.

Madison District Judge Charles Hardin arraigned 37-year-old John Payne of Waco in Madison County on Monday. The Lexington Herald-Leader reports Payne pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder and a count of tampering with physical evidence.

Autopsies confirmed that 55-year-old Cornelia Mullins and 32-year-old Meredith King were shot, but Richmond Police Chief Larry Brock wouldn't release further details Monday.

Mullins' and King's bodies were found Saturday at Mullins' house in Richmond.

A preliminary hearing will be held Dec. 15 to determine whether a grand jury will consider the case. Payne is being held in the Madison County jail on $500,000 bond.
