LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB Fox 41) -- Kentucky families made some tough goodbyes this morning, as they sent their loved ones off to Afghanistan and away for the holidays.

There were a lot of tears, hugs and kisses as 10 members of the Kentucky Air National Guard left Louisville International Airport.

Their duties in Afghanistan will include emergency management and engineering assistance.

43 airmen will deploy there by January 1st.

"We're airfield engineers," said Lt. Col. Phil Howard of the Kentucky Air National Guard. "We take care of the runway make sure the planes keep flying."

"He's fighting for our freedom right now," said Cheri Cecil, the wife of one of the soldiers.

For the Cecil family, it's the second deployment -- but only the first since they've had kids.

The Air National Guard members will be in Afghanistan for six months.
