LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB Fox 41) -- Heartland Payment Systems will expand its operations in Jeffersonville, Indiana, creating as many as 140 new jobs in the process.  Currently it employs more than 650 people.

The company says it is one of the largest providers of credit, debit, and pre-paid card processing services, as well as payroll, gift marketing, and check management services.  It will add 50,000 square feet of office space at its Jeffersonville center.  It's an investment of over $6.2 million expected to be finished by summer of 2011.

In a news release, Mitch Roob, Secretary of Commerce and chief executive officer of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, said, "This is further proof that Indiana's low-tax business model is making it a location of choice for global companies."

The company began operations in 1997 and has its headquarters in Princeton, New Jersey.  It says it processes more than 11 million credit and debit card transactions each day.

The state offered Heartland more than $1 million in tax credits, which are based on performance, and up to $200,000 in training grant.  One Southern Indiana requested that the city of Jeffersonville give a property tax abatement, and the city agreed.
