Memorial for Louisville homeless

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB Fox 41) -- In the midst of the holiday hustle and bustle, the community is being asked to remember lives that otherwise might be forgotten.  Wayside Christian Mission hosted its 12th annual Homeless Persons' Memorial Day.

Silent pall bearers carried a casket Tuesday morning up the steps of the Jefferson County Courthouse.  The memorial honors those homeless who have passed away in the past year.

As Nina Moseley of Wayside explains, "Many of these folks never have a funeral. Many times they're taken out to Paupers Field and there is never any way to say goodbye, and this is a way for us to celebrate their life, to show that they were important to this community and to say goodbye to them."

Moseley says the face of the homeless in Louisville is changing.  She's seeing more people who have lost their jobs and been down on their luck using local shelters.
