Bernson's Corner: Extreme Tree House

CRESTWOOD, Ky. (WDRB Fox 41) -- Christmas morning was the day magic happened for the Perkins children of Crestwood. Their Christmas present was this amazing tree house.

The kids' dad, Lance Perkins, dreamed it, designed it, and built it over five months of nights and weekends.

"They didn't have any idea what this thing was gonna look like," says Lance Perkins.

It's fully furnished, wired and insulated, all about 25 feet off the ground.  It's perched high in a couple of buckeye trees in the Perkins backyard overlooking Floyds Fork.

"My first task was to find a tree that would inspire me enough to say 'I can build something around this,'" says Perkins.

"Like I say, it's fully insulated, top, sides, underneath, it's got wi-fi, streaming movies...they inspired me to do this. If it wasn't for them, it wouldn't be here, but I put my flair on it, and kind of bring out a little of my childhood dreams, that's why it's over the top, and why I call it an extreme treehouse, cause it's more of a house in the trees versus an actual treehouse."

Perkins says the beams underneath the tree house are designed to float.  He explains how they have grooves, so they can slide as the trees move.

Now, 9-year-old Luci, 7-year-old Elli, 5-year-old Sami and 2-year-old Noah can entertain friends among the trees, although what they really like to do is levitate on a vine.

Perkins says, "What's amazing is when you've got insulation in this, you're 25 feet off the ground, and you're wrapped around the trees, and you're out here in the snow, watching 'Toy Story 3' with your kids, there's nothing like it....I'm still stuck back at 12 years of age, I think."

So this is what happens when a grown-up decides to be a kid again, and has tools and lumber. The Perkins treehouse is built of basic construction materials -- two-by-fours and dry wall and nails -- but it's also made of humor, love, and awareness.
