JCPS graduation dates changing again

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB Fox 41) -- Snow days mean graduation dates are moving again for JCPS high school seniors.

Graduation is always held the last day of school or later.

Kenny Frick is in charge of coordinating 23 graduations for the Jefferson County Public School District. He books locations like Freedom Hall, Broadbent Arena, the Iroquois Amphitheater and Bellarmine University.

"I've been doing this six years," Frick told Fox 41 News. "The first three years, we didn't have any snow days. But the last three years, we've had to shuffle it. It's been a mess."

With each snow day, the graduation date moves because graduation must be held on the last day of school or later. He says graduations can be done in three days.

The tentative schedule was Thursday May 26th, 27th and 28th. But now with five snow days, it's Friday June 3rd,  4th and 6th. Graduations are not held on Sundays.

"Manual, Eastern, Male, PRP... those four are the largest with 400 plus," he said. "Male has got the largest this year with 432. Manual last year was the largest."

He said those schools will likely have graduations at Freedom Hall.

Frick said JCPS has an agreement with the Fairgrounds to use Freedom Hall, Broadbent Arena and some of the halls for free because the Fairgrounds use JCPS storage space year-round.

"The catch with the Fairgrounds is we reserve dates," he said. "If someone comes and wants to rent those facilities and pay for it and it's some of the dates we want, we get kicked out and have to re-arrange our schedule."

Frick is hoping there won't be any more snow days because Freedom Hall is already rented out on June 8th and 9th.

JCPS had looked at possibly holding graduations at the KFC Yum Center, but the cost was too much.

"The budget which includes the diplomas and diploma covers, rental, fliers, and drapes, runs about $30,000 a year," Frick said.

He said most of the cost is for the diplomas and diploma covers.

The JCPS Board is expected to vote on the final graduation dates at its meeting in March. Deposits would then be put down for the locations.
