LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville Metro Police Officer fights for his life and wins. His story kicks off our monthly segment highlighting Hidden Heroes that walk among us.
"I didn't know if he was going to wake up, I didn't know if he was going to know us," said Officer Cheri Bower.
Her fear explained by pictures, snapshots from October 28th, 2007. It was the night Cheri Bower's husband and fellow Louisville Metro Police Officer's SUV hit a utility pole.
The accident left Matt Bower with serious head injuries.
"He didn't remember their ages, but he knew he had children. Matt knew we were married, but he didn't know how old he was," said Cheri Bower.
Matt Bower also knew he was a police officer, it was the first thing he remembered while in the hospital.
"The first words that came out of his mouth were "that's a good description on that guy" and I'm like who's he talking about? Work was the first thing on his mind," said Cheri Bower.
His brain injury forced Bower to learn how to live all over again including learning how to eat and walk. It wasn't long before he was up and running and back on the streets as a cop.
His dedication and will to live prompted his wife Cheri to nominate Bower as Fox 41's Hidden Hero.
"I'm proud of him for what he's been through and what he's done," Cheri Bower said.
"I've been through a lot and I've come back from a pretty bad incident. It feels good and it feels even more rewarding knowing that," said Matt Bower.
"I look at the whole situation as a blessing because it's changed everything for the better, everything in life is a little bit sweeter," said Cheri Bower.
Matt Bower has made a full recovery and continues working as a Louisville Metro Police Officer.
