Jeffersonville, In.(WDRB TV Fox 41) -- It's a store that caters to farmers and would-be farmers -- a new retailer is coming to Jeffersonville and bringing some new jobs with it.
Rural King describes itself as America's favorite farm and home retailer. Renovations are currently underway at the old K-Mart store on 10th Street.
A spokesperson at the company's headquarters in Matoon, Illinois tells Fox 41 that the store is scheduled to open in early April. "We are excited that a vacant big box retailer is going into the vacant property and be reused," says the executive director of redevelopment for Jeffersonville, Paul Wheatley.
Wheatley says the company is eligible for financial assistance to make improvements to the outside of the building. "We've instituted a Tenth Street facade grant," says Wheatley," and we hope that Rural King would pursue an application, it's a matching grant up to $10 thousand."
He says the city is planning to eventually widen Tenth Street to make the area more attractive for retailers and their customers.
Rural King is a chain of 48 stores in seven states. It sells everything from pet food and pet medicines to farm tools and clothing. It has been in business for fifty years, but the Jeffersonville store will be the first store in the Metro Louisville area.
The closest Rural King stores are in Owensboro, Kentucky and Jasper, Indiana.
The Jeffersonville store will need 60 employees. It is still taking applications at the Tenth Street site or you can apply on-line by going to www.ruralking.com.
The retailer is known for its free popcorn while customers shop in its stores.
