Guest Editorial – Big Brothers/Sisters (3/7/11)
We all want to make a difference in our lives and the lives of others. I believe young people are our future. Every child deserves a chance at success. Big Brothers/Big Sisters has helped me make a difference and I am encouraging you to see how easy and rewarding it is to be a Big.
I've been the Big Brother to my Little Brother Tyler for 4 years. Tyler's now 16 and a sophomore at Ballard. In the time we've been matched, I've made a friend, attended many fun BBBS events with Tyler and even survived student driving lessons with him!
You've probably heard about the great work Big Brothers/Big Sisters does, but have YOU ever considered becoming a Big? Right now there are over 400 local children waiting to be matched. The need is great…especially for Big Brothers.
Being a Big takes just a few hours a month and no special talents are needed. The best part is you can be yourself and share your life experiences. The agency provides support and fun activities for matches. And, Big/Little matches work. Kids who have a Big are more likely to graduate from college and give back to their communities. Plus, being a Big is just plain fun!
I encourage more men to volunteer today. Go to BigsWanted.com and see just how easy it is. Being a Big is a rewarding experience that makes a difference!
I'm Big Brother Ben Shown and that's my Point of View.
