A good broadcaster and a friend of mine announced his retirement last week. Steve Langford, the vice president and general manager of WAVE3-TV is calling it quits, I presume to spend some much needed time working on his golf game.
Most of us in broadcasting have had to move to several cities while our careers advanced, but Steve is one of those fortunate TV guys who have been able to rise to the top while spending most of his career at one station. Oh sure, he had to spend a couple years in Evansville, but the rest of his career has been at the station he loves.
Steve is a talented, very competitive guy whose word is like gold. As a competitor, he was tough but I always knew he would play fair. In my experience with him he often put the good of the community ahead of other provincial concerns. I remember a few years ago when WAVE held the exclusive broadcast rights to Thunder Over Louisville and another station decided to broadcast the festivities anyway, it was Steve who suggested the broadcast should be rotated in future years so everyone got a chance and no station could disrupt the event ever again. That was a quality move.
Steve, from all of us at WDRB, we wish you a wonderful retirement. And if you ever get your golf game in shape, give me a call.
I'm Bill Lamb...and that's my Point of View.
