Western Kentucky proclaimed fair trade university

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) -- Western Kentucky University President Gary Ransdell has proclaimed the school as a fair trade university, making it the fourth university in the country and first in Kentucky to officially back the movement.

Ransdell signed the proclamation on Saturday, as students and faculty gathered in Bowling Green for a national fair trade conference, which offered workshops, lectures, discussions and a fair trade market.

Fair trade is a movement that encourages consumers to purchase products from workers in developing countries at a fair price, sidestepping the commodities market that controls most goods.

Assistant Professor of Women's Studies Molly Kerby told The Bowling Green Daily News that the proclamation was "awesome."

The resolution says WKU will make fair trade products, such as food and clothing, more available on campus.
