When it comes to classic combinations, college basketball and the Commonwealth of Kentucky have to be right at the top of the list. And even if you didn't think so before, this year has provided all the proof you could ask for.
First, the University of Louisville Lady Cards made their third trip in four years to the women's NCAA Sweet Sixteen last week by upsetting fifth-ranked Xavier University on their opponent's home floor.
Then, last Thursday, the Bears of Pikeville College in eastern Kentucky pulled off the last of five consecutive upsets to win the NAIA Division 1 Championship.
Meanwhile, the Knights of Bellarmine College were busy knocking off BYU-Hawaii to take the national championship at the NCAA Division 2 level.
Then, to make the weekend complete, the Kentucky Wildcats toppled number one ranked Ohio State and North Carolina and moved on to their first Division 1 Final Four since 1998.
And hey – even though things didn't go as planned in the tournament, I think fans of the U of L men's team are also pretty pleased with a season that turned out to be a lot more exciting and successful than anyone expected.
Here's hoping the Cats earn their eighth national championship with two more wins. But regardless of what happens next, congratulations to everyone on the successes they've already earned. It's been a great season.
