Three Franklin County H.S. students die in crash

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB Fox 41) -- Three Franklin County High School senior students died after a horrific crash just after 2:00 Friday morning on Leestown Road (U.S. 421) in Franklin County.

Police say the car was speeding when it ran off the road, hit several trees, and caught fire.  Allen Williams, Benjamin Laslie and Nick Jacoby all died.

They were all 18 years old.

School superintendent Harrie Buecker says all three boys were active in the FFA and were well-liked among a senior class of about 240. The school had grief counselors available and had an assembly to notify students of the tragedy Friday morning.

Brenden Tillett, a friend of the victims, stopped at the crash site late Friday afternoon so he and some friends could erect three crosses in their memories. The mourners wrote messages on the backs of those crosses.

Franklin County schools are on spring break next week, but grief counselors will be available when the school re-opens on Monday, April 11.

Fox 41's Chris Turner visited the crash scene and reports seeing a long path of skid marks leading off-road to a point where it appears that the vehicle struck one tree and broke another in half.

Franklin County Sheriff Pat Melton said it appeared Jacoby was likely driving the car too fast.

Friends said the students were active in FFA, Future Farmers of America.

Toxicology tests will not be available for several weeks, Melton said.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
