Students from 103 counties attending WKU academy

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) -- Western Kentucky University's academy for high-achieving high school upperclassmen is expanding its enrollment, welcoming students from nearly every Kentucky county.

The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science at Western Kentucky University enrolls above-average juniors and seniors, and brings them to the Bowling Green campus. The program recently accepted 73 students for its Class of 2013, increasing its total enrollment and bringing in students from nearly every Kentucky county, The Daily News of Bowling Green reported. Enrollment has increased 7 percent to 128 students.

The academy now has enrolled students from 103 of the state's 120 counties. This year, officials heavily recruited students from northeastern Kentucky, said Corey Alderdice, assistant director of admissions and public relations.

The academy opened four years ago.
